Scarlet Begonia Spacecast: Kill Tony, Blackouts, and Front Range Chaos – A Comedian’s Survival Guide

Welcome back to the Scarlet Begonia Spacecast! After a brief hiatus, we’re diving into an action-packed episode featuring nerves, comedy stages, and a whirlwind of events that culminated in organizing a full comedy festival. In this episode, I’m sharing my hilarious and nerve-wracking journey through Austin, including a performance on the popular live show Kill Tony, and the chaos of running the Front Range Funny Festival. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to walk the tightrope of comedy, this one’s for you.

My Wild Trip to Austin: From Audience to the Kill Tony Stage

The episode kicks off with a humorous apology for my absence, comparing it to skipping college classes for something far more distracting—emails and a bit of weed. But I quickly move on to the highlight: my unforgettable trip to Austin in March. As a comedian, getting on Kill Tony is a huge opportunity, and I managed to score a spot on stage.

I recount the experience of waiting in line at the Comedy Mothership, where I met some interesting characters (including a Scottish guy who made the wait far more entertaining). Through a stroke of luck and a generous stranger, I even landed VIP tickets, setting the stage for what was to come.

On-Stage Nerves and Blackouts: The Comedian’s Nightmare

Performing live is always nerve-wracking, but this time it was on a whole new level. After a couple of drinks to take the edge off, I found myself on the Kill Tony stage. The nerves hit hard, and as always, my sense of time blurred, leading to what I like to call “performance blackout.” Eleanor Kerrigan and the rest of the panel watched as I delivered my set, though I was too nervous to remember how it went. The audience seemed to enjoy it, though, and that’s all that matters, right?

After the Show: A Secret Show and More Comedy Adventures

After my Kill Tony debut, the night wasn’t over. I was invited to a “Secret Show,” where I got the chance to perform again. Despite my nerves and not feeling like I was at my best, it was an amazing experience. Hanging out with other comedians, sharing stories, and yes, smoking some weed, marked this as one of the coolest nights in my comedy journey.

The Front Range Funny Festival: Organizing Chaos

Coming back from Austin, I jumped straight into organizing the Front Range Funny Festival. This was no small feat: 11 shows in two weekends, with tons of comedians to manage. It was absolute chaos, but I’m proud to say we pulled it off, paying every comedian and giving back to the community in the process.

Comedy Career Reflections and Lessons Learned

In this episode, I also reflect on the ups and downs of my comedy career. While being on Kill Tony was an exciting milestone, it didn’t lead to instant fame or more gigs. I share the story of my first headlining show, which didn’t go quite as planned, particularly when I used some dark humor at a VFW (oops).

Navigating relationships in the comedy scene is another topic I touch on, particularly the lesson of “not messing where you eat” after dealing with an ex who also worked in comedy. Relationships and comedy can be tricky, but hey, you live and learn.

What’s Next: Front Range Funny Fest 2 and Future Comedy Gigs

Looking ahead, I announce plans for Front Range Funny Fest 2, which I’m hoping to schedule around Easter and 4/20. I’m excited to blend comedy with charitable causes and put on an even bigger festival this time around. I’m also gearing up for more comedy gigs and festivals, hoping to be better prepared and more in control of my nerves in the coming year.

A Few Political Jokes for Good Measure

No episode would be complete without some light political humor. Towards the end, I share some jokes about conspiracy theories and the incompetence of politicians, particularly when it comes to women’s issues. With the upcoming elections, it’s hard not to poke fun at the ridiculousness of it all.
